Lesson Eight

Essential Element: Vocabulary

Framework(s): Use context clues to select appropriate dictionary definition

  • R.11.5.10

  • R.11.6.10

Rationale:

Vocabulary plays a critical role in people’s lives. An enriched vocabulary is a great indicator of an educated individual and contributes to strong reading

proficiency as well as general school achievement. (M.K.Smith)

Materials:

  • classroom texts

  • dictionaries

  • word lists

  • paper

  • pencils

  • word journals

Direct Explanation:

Many times when we read a definition from a dictionary, it has no real meaning for us. Today we’re going to discuss and develop student-friendly definitions for our vocabulary words. Using the first 5 words of your vocabulary list, you will look up the appropriate definitions in your dictionary and record them on the worksheet under ‘Dictionary Definition’. After completing this activity, we will work collaboratively on developing our own student-friendly definitions to record in our work journals.”

Model: morbid

  • Dictionary definition – not healthy or normal

  • Student-friendly definition – showing a great interest in horrible, gruesome details, especially about health

Guided Practice:

  • Students will be able to find dictionary definitions.

  • Whole class activity will be to collaborate on creating student-friendly definitions. See the Model above.

Application:

The class will divide into groups of 4 and using the last 5 words of your vocabulary list, you will first find the dictionary definition, then work together to develop a student-friendly definition. We will regroup as a whole class and decide on the best student-friendly definition to record in our word journals.”

Assessment: Students will match targeted vocabulary words with their dictionary definitions and then provide the student-friendly definitions.

Tier II Additions/Accommodations:

  • Provide dictionary definition on worksheet

  • Provide dictionary page numbers for each vocabulary word

  • Allow oral response of dictionary definition

Assessment: Provide students with dictionary definitions for comparison as they match words and student-friendly definitions.

Tier III Modifications:

  • Shorten the assignment

  • Provide copy of student-friendly definitions developed by the class/group

Assessment: When given both the dictionary definition and the student-friendly definition, the student will choose the student-friendly definition.

Tier IV Modifications:

  • Shorten assignment

  • Word bank of definitions to choose from

  • Electronic devices to aid with spelling and dictionary definitions, for example, a talking dictionary

  • Select personal vocabulary appropriate to activity or class lesson

  • Work with a peer to complete dictionary tasks

  • Use alternative methods for defining other than writing, e.g., define word by finding a picture, drawing a picture, make a choice to select correct definition

Assessment:

  • Successful completion of assignment at a predetermined level

  • Making a portfolio of words and their denotative and/or connotative meanings

  • Successful use of the words in context using a variety of methods

Tier V Modifications:

  • Word bank of definitions to choose from using alternatives to the written word (match to sample, i.e., object to object, object to symbol, symbol to word….)

  • Use alternative methods for defining other than writing, e.g., define word by finding a picture, drawing a picture, make a choice to select correct definition

  • Select personal vocabulary appropriate to activity or class lesson using whatever method of access is appropriate to the student

  • Work with a peer to complete dictionary tasks

Assessment:

  • Engage a student in a conversation using the selected vocabulary

  • Make a portfolio of words and their personal meaning as used by the student in various environments throughout the lesson, using the method of access most appropriate for the student
